No Backs...

I am over everyone getting sick or feeling sick or being sick. Over. Done.

Drake has been dancing with a bug for over a month and it finally "whooped" his arse. Went to the clinic last Wednesday because his coughing was so bad that he was beet red, his eyes were blood red, he was clammy and crying. A hot mess. He was given a breathing treatment and an Rx for antibiotic for pneumonia.

Thursday home, Friday home, weekend home...

Monday he isn't doing better so back to the clinic we go. No more pneumonia, no fever, no sinus issues but no change. Suspected whooping cough. So he has to be tested for pertussis which did not look like fun. It took 2 adults to hold him, pin him and swab in the top inside of his nose for 15 seconds. FIFTEEN! I have never seen Drake so mad. No, it was WAY beyond mad. Livid. Enraged. Murderous. He was mad at all of us. Me because I took him to the Dr. The Dr. for ordering the test, the nurse for administering the test and for having to pin him down. He finally forgave me after he finished a bowl of mac & cheese.

We are sent home with a new antibiotic in case it turns out to be whooping cough, a high dose of steroids (I failed to mention that he threw up his Concerta that morning), and a handful of masks. It was a long day. Thankfully the steroids didn't turn him into Tigger on sugar-coated, caffeinated Adderall. Not so thankful that he was feeling bad enough to not have it effect him. Finally got a call that evening saying that he was negative for whooping cough.

Today I fully intended for him to go back to school. Not contagious. Not vomiting. No fever. I chuckled to myself thinking I should pin a note on his sweatshirt reading "No backs".

Drop him off at 8:20am.
School starts at 8:40am.
School calls at 9:30am because directions on Rx do not match Dr. instructions.
School calls again at 9:38am with a request to pick him up.

No one, including himself, could concentrate or get work finished because of the coughing that was now nearly nonstop. Now the crying starts because he feels horrible and the coughing is hurting his throat so the tears bring on the runny nose which heralds the sniffling which only makes the coughing worse and had triggered asthma. My Man-Drake is home now. Showered in a steamy bathroom, bed made on the recliner, clean mask, water, crackers and cough drops at the ready and he is calming down. I'm not even on the naughty list for saying no games, electronics or video other than educational PBS or BBC movies. Yeah. He feels that bad.

This Mum needs a break because right about now I am feeling like 10 gallons of crazy in a 5 gallon bucket. Or to quote my PT, "Nuttier than squirrel poop".

Simone. The High Priestess of Soulful Food. Ohm...

Drake and his bestie, Simone, rode the bus home together to spend the afternoon at our house.  At first I was a little intimidated by her diet restrictions but I have never backed down from a culinary challenge.  It's actually nice to have a productive challenge as opposed to "how do I get my kid to eat that when I know he eats it at Simone's house...".  Drake is a very picky eater.  Nothing green, no veggies, nothing squishy (I fall into that group), no rice, no potatoes (except crispy smashed potatoes--OMG, YUM! or fries), no beans, yada, yada, yada...  If you are a parent, you know the list.  However, this little stinker will go to Simone's house and happily eat whatever they serve.  I have been covertly adding "Simone Foods" to our menu and it has been successful so far.  I have even stooped so low as to suggest, "Can't imagine why you won't try it, pretty sure Simone likes this.".   Shameless, I know.  Moving on!

Simone's diet is gluten free, soy free, and diary free and her Mom is a freakin' superhero!  I took some time to look through a stack of recipes that I have been wanting to make, but not up to hearing the complaints, and found some things that would work for Simone.  So tonight we had Grilled Garlic and Basil Pork Chops, Crispy Smashed Potatoes (<-- seriously addictive) and Steamed Broccoli.  For dessert I found a recipe for a No Bake Apple Crumble Bar.  This is where my day of enlightenment began.

First, I still needed a few things for dinner and for the weekend so I headed over to the grocery store.  Apples.  I was headed for Honeycrisp but was distracted by Lady Alice.  I have NEVER heard of Lady Alice apples before today.  Lucky for me I read the price wrong and bought them before I realized my mistake (7 bones for 6 apples).  They are AMAZING!!!  Crisp, sweet with a bit of tartness and very juicy.  *drool*

Second, Coconut Flour.  If you have never had it before, don't avoid it.  It smells absolutely divine!

Third, Earth Balance Organic Coconut Spread.  Okay, technically I didn't need this but it fit all the requirements and it is now my new favorite buttery spread.  Can't wait for breakfast tomorrow.  Dave's Killer Bread + Coconut Spread = No, Mommy is not going to share.

I have a pretty wide selection of what I would consider odd staples in my pantry.  I got to use many of them tonight and everything was super tasty.  Therefore, I love Simone!  Don't tell Drake, he will hog her all to himself.

For those that are curious and want to try the recipes from tonight, here you go!

Grilled Pork Chops with Garlic and Basil

Crispy Smashed Potatoes - NOTE:  Throw in some peeled garlic cloves while boiling potatoes and add them to the "smash".

Steamed Broccoli
....yeah, steamed broccoli...

No Bake Apple Crumble Bars

And yes, Drake ate it all and LOVED it all!  Even the green!  BAM!

Out with the old...

Gone are the days of the sweet LOLs (Little Old Ladies).  I have commented in the past that the social expectations and rules just don't seem to apply anymore.  Numerous times I have waited, arms full, pouring rain, trying to cross from a store to the parking lot while drivers just zoom by.  Not only do people rarely stop to allow pedestrians to cross but the worst offenders, in my experience, are the LOLs.  Yet, if you reverse the roles and I was the driver that rudely cut off a LOL pedestrian, I would have been scolded; and rightly so!  I would have been reprimanded by my parents!  It shouldn't matter the age, it's just common courtesy.

Of late, I have seen many unusual and unexpected activities by LOLs.  Talking into a calculator while thinking it was a phone.  Arguing with GPS navigator voice as if they were having a two way conversation and being ignored.  Looking for glasses while pulling out of a parking spot with no hands on the wheel.  These are just to name a few.  Today, however, I experienced a new kind of LOL.

As I was leaving the grocery store, I noticed a LOL getting ready to back out of her parking space.  I decided to wait in favor of keeping all my limbs and my life.  She was clearly distracted and taking her time but I wasn't in a big rush.  As she reverses and gets half of her car out of the parking space, she notices me standing there.  I smiled but apparently my presence had startled her so she began to yell expletives...at me... followed by something very similar to this...

...but with a colossal amount of anger.  Needless to say, I was taken back by this reaction.  So I stood there rather dumbstruck trying to decide between laughter or shock.  This didn't bode well and my apparent lack of apology truly enraged her.  Before I could register what was happening, she slammed on the brakes and proceeded to flip me off with both hands, wrapping her knuckles on the window in the process.  Again...I'm still deciding how to register this so I keep staring at this train wreck of a situation.  At this point the LOL is getting honks from a nearby car because she is still in reverse, has put her foot on the gas is is coming very close to hitting their car.  She shifts the car into drive, gives me one last glare and drives off yelling "If you were MY daughter, I would have taught you some F^#%ING manners!"

I must admit that I immediately looked around to see if anyone else had witnessed this debacle and once our eyes met, we both burst into such laughter that I thought my side would split.

There you have it.  There's a new kind of LOL in town and she won't being having any of your shenanigans.

Note:  Just because this story was focused on a LOL doesn't mean that LOMs are any better.  Usually, the LOL is chauffeuring the LOM.

The Drake Equation

Today our little man turns 8.  In some ways it honestly feels much longer than 8 years.  In other ways I can't believe it's already been 8!  I remember my first day with Drake.  You go to the hospital to have your second (or 3rd, or 4th...) and after the baby is born and everyone fights over holding him and commenting on his hair or color or who he looks like, they all disappear.  *Crickets chirping*   Even the hospital staff.  It is almost as if they are thinking, "She's done this before, she won't need anything, lets go help the brand new mommy in room 3".  At one point I gave up on the nurse call button and roamed the halls in my rear a/c fashion gown (fairly certain ass chaps would have covered more) in search of water with ice.  Needless to say I had a lot of one on one time with him.  I couldn't stop staring at him or smoothing my hand over his head, or snuggling and smooching him.

I had been so worried before he was born that I wouldn't be able to love him the way I loved Robby.  How could you possibly be able to?  But when I held him and we were all alone, I felt like the Grinch.  My heart swelled and I realized how ridiculous I had been.  The love I had wasn't going to be split between the two, it doubles and triples.  I was so overwhelmed with just how magical and special he was to me.  He was mine.  And I didn't have to share him, with anyone, until the next day.  I remember saying to him, "Where have you been all my life?  I have been waiting for you."  I still say that to him, to both the boys.

I got to be Drake's Mommy.  I realize that just the thought terrifies some of you when you imagine being in my shoes.  But the rewards are never ending and I wouldn't trade places with anyone else.  Not ever.

You can't fit 10 gallons of crazy in a 1 gallon house.

CAN!

I decided today that I needed to take time to update our family blog.  There have been many changes for this tribe of ours.  Robby and Drake are now attending different schools on opposite sides of the district.  Both Boblings are in wrestling again this year with Bob helping as an assistant coach and acting as webmaster for the wrestling club.  Chase is busy working and going to school.  Ryan is busy working, going to school and hoping for teleportation to be invented tomorrow.  Sam and Dayton are busy trying to keep Ryan tethered to sanity.  Diamand is getting ready to leave for Basic Training after the first of the year.  Trish is buying a house down the street from us.  I am still keeping books, bending wire and I got a coaches membership so I could go on the mats to photograph at the tournaments.

There are so many changes happening.  Many that are unexpected.  A few that are terrifying.  Most are very welcomed.  I feel like I have run an obstacle course uphill, blindfolded, with vertigo but for the first time in my parenting life I feel relief.  Someone congratulated us on our perilous journey, took the machete from our hands, handed us a map and pointed us towards the beautifully groomed trail ahead with our guide waiting for us.  I didn't fail at crazy!  I was looking in the wrong place!  And guess what?!  It was never crazy, it was just an alternate version of normal.  Although, I still prefer to have it labeled as crazy because I ROCK crazy.

Yes.  I realize that you have no idea what I am talking about and that is okay too.  For all you know, this is a private conversation and you were caught eavesdropping.  Let me just assure you that this really will make sense.  That I am still the same person but with a new appreciation for my "non compos mentis" life and I am indeed sober.

On a serious note, I will take all the little bits that have taken over and explain them each in posts this week.  My goal is that someone somewhere who needs to hear any part of this will hear this.  Because life is too darn short to remake or rename the wheel.

Until then... (this is my cliff hanger.)

The stand off.

I have commented before about how diametrically opposite the boblings are.  Robby is like me, he wants things neat and orderly.  Actually, he is very much like Bob in that he wants things put away but he still has the uncontrollable need to acquire crap.  Of course, to them it is not crap but I assure you, it is indeed crap.

Now Drake is an interesting combination of his parents.  He inherited my social skills and my empathy (Robby took all of Bob's apathy).  However, he latched on to the "I must acquire crap" gene from Robby and Bob.  Although, in this we are all agreed (except Drake) that he acquires garbage.  Literally.  The child will dumpster dive in our trash and recycling and scurry away with his treasures.

Two nights ago Drake discovered a large empty box which Bob then gave to him.  I sat at my table muttering something about "Great...feed the habit..." as my eye began to twitch.  Drake's room will get so bad that I find myself avoiding it, even looking in, and getting through bedtime tuck in as fast as I can with blinders on.  So I started a tradition with Drake.  When his collection gets to the point where I want to kick puppies, then I will allow him to keep his latest and greatest treasure in exchange for Mommy going in and cleaning his room MY way.  This is always accomplished while he is in school or out of the house otherwise every straw or empty toilet paper tube becomes "but that is my FAVORITE!!  It is SPECIAL to me".

Today I took into Drake's room MY way.  He gets to keep the large box which he labeled toy box and I got to throw away kleenex he had pinned to his wall, lollipop sticks that he hid in is sock drawer and the nearly empty soda can he made into a rocket...upside down.  I went a little over board so I am now off to Toys'R'Us to buy a Nerf basketball set...to replace the broken net he got from school ("can you believe it was free?!") that he had pinned to his bed, the wall and his dresser which wasn't able to stay up with the weight of his pillow pet.

This is not happening...

My plan was to post some of my favorite Drake memories on Facebook today so I came over here to my blog and shared a few.  Unfortunately my FAVORITE Drake story was only eluded to in the "Amateur" post.  The original must have been in my old blog.  So... I thought I would take a moment to retell the story for those that are unfamiliar with it.

It was back when Drake was only 3 or 4.  My girlfriend and her daughter went with us to St. Edwards park to let the kids run and play for the morning.  The boys and I had never been to that park so it was quite fun.  After a few hours of play we decided it was time to get cleaned up for lunch and head home.  As we are walking to the van we past the restrooms.  I asked Robby to take Drake into the bathroom and for both of them to wash their hands.  My girlfriend and I stood outside waiting for them when all of a sudden Robby comes running out of the bathroom yelling, "MOM!!!  Drake has some sort of a balloon in his mouth!"  Pause for effect...Are you thinking the same thing I was thinking at that precise moment?

I VAULTED into the Mens room, completely uncaring who I may catch off guard, only to discover that he indeed had a balloon in his mouth, a little green water balloon.  I was SO relieved that is wasn't the "balloon" I feared it was, I tossed it in the trash, tried not to think about the fact that he had retrieved it from UNDER a urinal and made a mental not to kiss him until I had brushed his teeth 100 times.

Later that night when I was finally able to laugh about the scenario, I posted a blog about it.  It was all laughs and "OMG's!" until a friend of mine (who works for the police department) asked if I was sure it wasn't a "mule balloon".  OMG!!!  These are my choices?!  A "love balloon" or a cocaine balloon that had been lodged in someones carcASS?!

Thankfully, after my brain shut down while I was huddled in the corner, rocking and muttering, "This is not happening.  This is not happening..."  I did what every self respecting mother would do.  I repressed that thought and those images and didn't smooch him for a week.

You can't buy memories like these.  You really can't.

Ninjas don't wear cowbells

Robby and Drake, first day of 3rd and 1st grade.

School is back in session and this is a whole new world to me.  For the first time in over 8 years I have no children home with me during the day.  What did I do with my first day of freedom?  I had early coffee with a great friend, followed by grocery shopping, followed by my very first day of work and earning a wage in 12+ years.  *sigh*

I had the day off today and it started out fantastic!  Coffee, pedicure, couple of errands, time with Gen, a little cleaning, donation drop off and all before 1pm!  Off to pick up my cherubs from school.

Robby is LOVING his class and teacher.  No problems settling back in at all.  Drake is learning a whole new side to school not to mention trying to make it through a long day.

Drake's teacher meets them in the morning in the commons (a.k.a. lunchroom) so he has about 20 minutes of sitting in the lunch room with other kids as they eat breakfast.  Do you see where this is going?  Are we all clear on Drake's favorite pastime?  The first day of school he managed to score a free breakfast.  Today he tried again but Robby caught him and couldn't get Drake to leave the food line so he had to tell a teacher.  This resulted in a 8:23am call to me (they were dropped off at 8:10am) letting me know that I need to have a chat with Drake about how the food services works and when he is allow to use his code.  I thought it was no big deal because I was NEVER going to give Drake the code.  That would just asking for trouble.  Unfortunately a well meaning para educator taught Drake to memorize his code.  ARGH!

Fast forward, another Drake incident, fast forward, headache starting, fast forward, I fell again, fast forward, playing at the park after school.  STOP!

I had a wonderful time chatting with the Moms at our usual picnic table and then I see Drake walking across the grass with a small, green, biodegradable bag.

Me:  "Drake, where did you get the green bag?"
Drake:  "Over by the sign with the dog on it."
Me:  "Where are you going and why do you have the green doggy bag?"
Drake:  "I need to find someplace private."
Me:  O.o  "Why?"
Drake:  "I have to poop."
Me:  "In the doggy poo bag?  Right here at the park?!"
Drake:  "Yeah."
Me:  "How about we walk over to the bathrooms instead?"
Drake:  "Okay, but this would have been faster." (clearly exasperated)

For this and every other time I am mere seconds away from a disaster, I am thankful for my Drake-dar.

*"Ninjas don't wear cowbells" is courtesy of Michelle.  It was her reply to my plea to have the boys wear cowbells so they would stop sneaking up behind me and scaring me senseless.

Dear Za Za...

Perhaps I am snarky because it is too bleedin' early in the morning for a day "off" but I must rant.

We are down to one car right now while Bob's mustang is getting some much needed TLC at the mechanics.  This means that I have been driving him to the park & ride before 6am to catch his bus.  Granted it has been 12 years since I commuted to work but a few things haven't changed.  Basic dress code for a downtown office job is one of them.  Here we go...

This morning as I drop Bob off for the bus I a needed to stop for a young "lady" who was walking rather slowly and reminiscent of a robot.  Then I saw her shoes.  They looked very similar to the pair in the photo only not as nice.

Advice from Za Za.  Honey, if you are wearing shoes like this at 6 in the morning, then you are headed in the wrong direction.  These shoes are meant to be headed home at 6 in morning, NOT to an office job.  Very few woman can pull off walking gracefully in 5" heels and when they do, they are not rushing anywhere.  These shoes have a purpose, a theme, a mission if you will.  Commuting to a downtown office job isn't it.  Try something lower, easier to walk in and that doesn't scream your intentions for getting to the top at work. Save them for special occasions, evenings out where you are able to walk slowly or stand and show off your legs and appear graceful.

Also, to the other gal I saw walking is flip flops and micro shorts.  IT'S 32*F OUTSIDE!  PUT SOME CLOTHES ON BEFORE YOU CATCH YOUR DEATH OF COLD!!!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Or as Drake likes to call it, Leprechaun day!

A friend of mine on facebook shared this photo today and I just can't stop smiling when I look at it.  Drake thinks this a real live leprechaun.

Looking outside I see the cold and dripping wet morning but I know that spring really will follow.  It is early in the morning and quiet and I have a wonderful cup of coffee.  The weekend is wide open with nothing scheduled, oh the possibilities!  And today is the Feast of Saint Patrick.  I have corned beef with cabbage, carrots and potatoes ready for the crockpot.  I am so content in my life right now and I am surrounded by blessings.

This Saint Patrick's Day I will post all of my favorite Irish Blessings and saying to share.   Slainte!  To your health!

"God invented whiskey so the Irish wouldn't rule the world!"

"May you always have
Walls for the wind,
A roof  for the rain,
Tea beside the fire,
Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you,
And all your heart may desire!"

"May you live to be a hundred years
With one extra year to repent."

"May you have warm words on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill all the way to your front door."

"May your blessings outnumber
the shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you,
Wherever you go."

"There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head.
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How in the hell can he drink when he is dead?"

"May the best day of your past,
Be the worst day of your future."

Zenanigans

I have been very remiss in updating the blog but I have a very GOOD reason.  I am now officially a small business owner!  The last 4 weeks have been a whirlwind for me with making jewelry, learning what is needed to create this business, keeping up with orders and just being a wife/mom.  Baby steps.

Zenanigans now has it's own Facebook page!  facebook.com/Zenanigans

I will eventually get a website set up for it but that is out of my league so I will be haunting some friends for help with that.  We do have a blogspot for Zenanigans and I will do my best to keep on top of that with new projects and techniques I am working on.  Here is our blogspot:  http://zenanigans.blogspot.com/

If you see something that you LOVE and must have (YAY!!), please go over to the facebook page and send Zenanigans a message or shoot me a message here.

I want to end this post with my deepest most heartfelt thanks to all of you who have been so supportive and encouraging.  I wouldn't have had the courage to forge ahead if it hadn't been for you.  I also want to thank my parents Herb & Trish for pushing me and cheering me on to find a talent and build on it.  Dad wanted me to start a business years ago and although he isn't here to toast to it, I know that he is still cheering me on and proud of me.

Much love,
Jessica (Za Za)

P.S.  If you go check out the Zenanigans page on Facebook and you like what you see, please like our page!

I have been a busy bee this week working on jewelry sets, gathering tools and supplies and trying to sort out all the questions being thrown at me.  One thing has become clear and that is I need a name for this jewelry venture and I need it fast.  All the pictures of my pieces and sets are on my personal facebook page so I can't just direct people to them without opening that up to the public.  That I won't do so time for a new plan.  Come up with a name and then create another blogspot and/or facebook page.

Still needing to figure out the best way for packaging, shipping, etc.  Not to mention software for tracking, inventory, tax, etc.  I know a certain someone that is champing at the bit for me to get business cards and pretty bags.  One thing at a time.

You should start a business!

My Dad has been saying that to me for years.  Well that and that I should write a book.     I have decided to take on the first one, so one step at a time, Pop!

I am making jewelry now, working with wire, beads, etc.  Going to try my hand at chain maille jewelry here pretty soon.  I was having a blast when I started making the pieces (still am) but then someone suggested that I sell them (thanks Michelle!).  I got so excited about the idea because that would be a great way to bring in income and still let me have my time to take care of the family and work around the boys school schedule.  Sick days alone would be great for me!  Them home watching TV or napping would allow me to make tons of stuff while I looked after them.

I talked to Bob about the possibility of starting my own business and he was supportive but suggested that I work at it a little longer and see what the demand would be.  So far I have had great feed back on my pieces and today I sold my very first set!!!  HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ME!!!  Thank you, MO!!!

I LOVE this piece and it took me a couple days before I convinced myself that I could part with it and sell.  Pretty silly of me considering I could just make another one for myself.  This is an 18" gunmetal double infinity link with dyed pink jade.

Since I tend to have a problem with "MINE!" and "SQUIRREL!", I decided that I needed to lay down some rules.  1)  I promise to make something new and different everyday for the first few weeks.  Originally, I was only wanting to make things that I would want to keep but that isn't practical or business smart.  So instead I am going to make pieces that I like, that intrigue me, that require a skill I need to learn or one that seems challenging.  I am not a big hearts gal and really not a Valentine groupie (except when it comes to my menfolk) but yesterday I made this.  I think this turned out great!  My poor fingers are raw and beat up but it was well worth it.  This is an 18" chain of hearts made out of antique brass wire.

So now reality sets it and I will have to rely heavily on the left brainers that I love because SQUIRREL!  You get the idea.  I was up until 2 am the other day because I couldn't turn off my brain trying to think of a design name.  Now I have people asking me about PayPal accounts, shipping methods, inventory by count or weight, packaging, fairs/shows.  *head exploding*

It very well may require my entire village to help this idiot but I can do it!  I foresee many awkward moments  when it makes perfect sense to me and Bob is just shaking his head.

Wish me luck!  Better yet, order your own "precious"...

Note:  I only listed 1 rule?  See?!

Which-craft

I have been playing with beading off and on forever.  I enjoy so many different types of crafts/sewing but I have been focusing on quilting more than anything else the last 10 years.  One thing I always wanted to try my hand at was wire jewelry.  I found this book yesterday while shopping at JoAnn's.  Needless to say I had no choice, it required that I bring it home.

I bought a few supplies to begin one of the patterns and attempted to make it today.  My technique isn't perfect to say the least but I have the basics down and I don't think anyone would really notice my mistakes other than someone already experienced with wire jewelry.  I hit a bit of a road block in that I don't have a couple tools they want you to have.  So I finished all that I could except the "chasing" steps.  I also took some time to fiddle with wire flowers.  Here is what I have to show for my play time today.
The little pieces that look like old fashion spectacles need to be "chased" or flattened to harden the metal and then joined with jump rings.  I also bought jade chips and a pretty lime chip to make variations of this set and possibly bracelets to compliment them.  Here is what the finished product is supposed to look like.
A friend has offered to help teach me and spend some time learning other techniques.  I googled a couple that she mentioned and WOWSA!  Yeah, Bob isn't going to be happy unless I find a way to pay for this new "habit".  I am thinking about renting the Boblings out as birth control.  Serious bank right there.

"Inner peace... Inner peace..." Master Shifu

I have been trying to spend more time slowing down and making my life less complicated overall.  Going through the list of "have-to/gotta's" and paring it down to only the things that really make a positive impact for myself and my family.  Taking care of me and making time for myself is a hard one so I thought adding meditation back into my day would help.  Not sure it is working.

So I bought a book on meditation 4 years ago and I have yet to get past the 2nd chapter.  To be honest, it is "technically" the 1st chapter but I DID read the intro so I am calling the 1st chapter the 2nd chapter so that I seem less pathetic.  Anyway...

Quiet room: check. (6am: Bob gone to work, boys still asleep) Close your eyes, focus your attention about 2 or 3" in front of your 3rd eye: Umm...okay...check.

Now, breathe deeply, clear your mind.  *sigh* I can hear the furnace.  Stop!  Focus...block out the hum of the furnace, breathe in, exhale.  Shoot, I just heard one of the boys cough so they will be up soon, better hurry and get this meditation thing done!  Focus!

Clear.  Your.  Mind.   Breathe.  Okay, here we go, I can totally do this.  I'm breathing, I am focusing my attention in front of m 3rd eye...  What is a 3rd eye anyway?  That's probably covered in chapter 2, I mean 3!  I think my forehead is getting hot right where that 3rd eye is supposed to be.

Seriously, FOCUS!  None of this matters!  Relax, take some time for you!  Now, breathe...

Success!  I did it! For like an hour! *peek at clock*  1 minute?  Really?!  Ugh!

I have an itch.  I have to pee.  Did we take the garbage to the street?

Not quitting!  Shake out the wiggles, center, focus.  "Mom, I just peed in my bed and stepped in cat puke and I think Robby is throwing up".

Right.

Whoever thought this was a good idea?

I have been feeling bad about not keeping up my blog, it's been 3 months since my last post.  I have been trying to think about what I would like to write and then yesterday it became clear.

I was driving to get the boys after school and I saw something very similar to this.
Honestly, this is one of my pet peeves.  How does this seem like a good idea?!

First, let's look at this from the viewpoint of a new perspective owner.  I see this couch and my skin crawls, I immediately start to take a mental inventory of all the disgusting, flesh eroding viruses, crusty scabby critters and general doggy bag left overs that are most likely fighting for control of this couch.  Just how bad does life get or how stoned to you have to be to think that lugging this beast home to sit/lay on is better than, oh, I don't know, LAYING ON THE FLOOR OF A PUBLIC RESTROOM AT A TRAIN STATION?!?!  Seriously?!  I would rather lick the mat in the wrestling room than get anywhere near this.

One moment...I am feeling erpy...

Now, the person donating this positively outstanding specimen (a.k.a.  POS).  Have you no pride?  No sense of value?  I will just say it... Not even the basic understanding of hygiene?!  Take pride in your possession, maintain them, CLEAN them.  The only logical reason I can fathom for you to have a couch in this condition is that you yourself found it, while stoned, and decided it was too damn heavy to carry home!

Granted, not all street sofas are in this condition but dragging it to the street and leaving it there, even under the guise of  "helping those less fortunate" makes you the poster child for LAZY!  There are charities that handle this and they pick up...for free!  Instead you drag it out, probably after bribing a couple of your other stoned friends to help you schlep it.  Now what?  Think it through?  Its been a week, maybe two?  We live in Seattle where there is a pretty darn good chance of rain.  If I didn't want your positively outstanding specimen before, what makes you think that adding 20lb of rainwater and mold will up the "curbside appeal".  So it sits and eventually you will still have to take care of removing it.  However, the only place left to take it to is the dump so this "donation" is now costing you a dump fee.

Although I am not a MENSA member, I  can clearly see that THIS is a horrible idea.
Just say NO to curbside positively outstanding specimens.  The CDC will thank you for it.

Telling on Dad

Dad's celebration of life was last night and after much debate I decided to speak.  I had many family and friends ask for a copy of my speech so I decided to post it here.  Love you, Dad!

I have had this “story” working in my head for over a month now.  On the surface it seems like such an easy task.  Tell stories about Dad, share his life.  I found myself hitting a rock wall every time I would sit down to write and I was pretty distraught about it until I talked it over with Mom last night.  She listened and then put it very simply, “Tell on Dad.”  I chuckled over that but as the evening went on the little light bulb above my head started to shine.  I could do that.  He tattled on me PLENTY of times so I should consider this my Karmic duty, right?

27 years ago Dad came into my life and in all honesty I didn’t know what to think about that.  I have joked for many years that I wanted a puppy and Mom brought home Herb.  Hindsight being 20/20, I really wanted both although I think the dog was easier to train…

We needed something in common but really, what could that be?  To me, he was old with a big bushy mustache and even bigger glasses, plus he was a boy.  It had been Mom and I together for so long that to introduce a “boy” was very troublesome.  What we did have in common was humor and our need to slather it on thick.  Okay, humor.  In all good jokes there is a target.  A target…  Mom.

Ganging up on Mom was a favorite past time for Dad and I.  He taught me so much and so many ways that we could show her just how much we loved her.  For instance, when a mature woman is frustrated, emotional, irritable and beginning to glisten; she needs a hug.  Group hugs are best so we would surround her and hug her until the hot flash was over.  I was concerned that Mom may not be enjoying our show of affection but Dad assured me that her squirming and scolding was just Mom’s way of saying that she appreciated us.

We also made sure to give her gifts weekly.  Typically we gave her our gifts on Sundays, right after church.  Our bulletins, gum wrappers, communion cups…it was all for her.

Another pearl that Dad gave me, usually after Mom had watched a chick flick or read something mushy was that I should NEVER grow up to be a woman.  I can’t begin to tell you how many times he reminded me of this.  My reply to him was “I won’t if you won’t”, which he would follow up with “DEAL!”

It wasn’t all fun and game though.  Well at least not for me, Dad was still having a great time.  When I was brainstorming and making a list of things to tattle on Dad, I came up with the group title of “Going to need counseling”.

When I was 11 Dad started to warn me about a very serious disease that struck kids when they turned 13.  He built it up over a period of weeks until finally one day, he told me the name of this horrid disease.

“It’s called Brain Damage”, he said.  I was very gullible so I believed him and would come up to him and ask “Do I have it yet, Dad?  Do I have it yet?”

Around the same age Dad asked me if I wanted to go on an outing with he and his friend Jerry Enders.  They were closed lipped about it until we all piled into the cab of the truck and set out.

“Where are we going, Dad”, I asked.
“Some place that it is a secret and you have to know the password”, he said
“But I don’t know the password”, I replied.
“Don’t worry, we are going to teach it to you on the way but you have to get it right or they won’t let you go in with us”, Dad said

I was getting very nervous not to mention curious about the type of place they were taking me.  They said that they couldn’t tell me what was there, they were only allowed to teach me the password.  Okay, I can do this.

“What is the password?” I asked

“MAG-NOL-IA!”  he said.  “And you have to say it just like that or you will be left outside, so you better practice”.

I practiced over and over again, the entire ride.  In all honesty, I have NO idea how they were able to keep a straight face.  Imagine my reaction when we pulled up in front of an electronics store.

Now I am 12 and I am out playing with friends in the neighborhood.  We got thirsty and hungry so we all headed back to my house.  Mom and Dad had left to run errands; our toilet seat had broken so they went to get a new one.  As I am filling cups I hear my friends start to crack up.  Dad had taken my school photograph off the wall and placed it under the toilet seat on the table.  When one of my friends lifted the lid (as Dad KNEW they would do), they were rewarded with my smiling face.
13…  It was my first sleep over party, I was elated.  Mom got me a new perm, my friends were coming over to stay, we had a scary movie to watch and junk food to eat.  The movie was called “Slumber Party Massacre”.  Now that I think about it, I am not sure if I picked that movie out or if he did.  The premise of the story was a wacko who took a 18” drill bit and ran it through his victims skulls.  Pleasant, right? We freaked out so we turned it off and watched the rest in the morning.  Dad and Mom were making us all pancakes for breakfast so I went into the bathroom to wet my hair.  As I am stooped over the sink with my head in the water, I hear a drill next to my ear.  I was so scared that I cracked my head against the faucet and nearly wet my pants.  Dad just giggled, walked back to the kitchen, laid the drill on the table and went back to flipping the pancakes.

Dad was strict on certain things.  Having a 6’4” Dad at home with a very no nonsense attitude about rule breaking was truly enough to steer me clear of most shenanigans but I was a teenager…with brain damage, remember.  Just before I turned 17, I got my first car.  I made plans to take my boyfriend out for his birthday.  We were going to dinner at pier 70 and then to Seattle Center for rides and games.  The rule was that I wasn’t allowed to drive on the freeway unless Mom or Dad where with me.  Do you know how long it takes to get to and from Seattle on Hwy 99?  Needless to say I was running late after I dropped my date off and went racing home to beat curfew.  When I rounded the corned and saw that the house was dark I was grinning from ear to ear.  Planning my happy dance for having such fun that night AND them not knowing I missed curfew.  I parked my car, headed for the front door when out of the corner of my eye I saw a faint glow.  My heart stopped, my feet stopped, my brain stopped as I realized where the glow was coming from.  Dad stood in the shadows of the garage, waiting for me.  The glow was from his lit cigarette he was smoking while on stake out.

“Busted” he whispered

If he had been waiting inside with the lights on I would have been terrified but prepared.  He heard me coming from the subdivision entrance, he heard me race up the hill, he heard me screech around the corner and zip right into the cul-de-sac.  He watched the joy on my face when I thought I was safe.  He watched me mentally practice my “happy dance”.  Then he watched every ounce of color drain from my face when I realized that I was indeed “busted”.

Now I am 27, I have graduated college, worked a good job, got married and bought a home.  Shortly after Bob and I were married I quit my job to stay at home.  Dad’s reply?  “Well that was the best $40,000 I ever spent…”

32, I am in the hospital after giving birth to Drake.  Grandma and Grandpa had taken Robby back to our house for a nap and to play.  Two days later Bob brings us home.  I am sore, I have staples in my abdomen, I am sleep deprived.  The door bell rings.  I waddle slowly down the stairs and meet the lovely Mormon’s looking for Herb.  “He was so delightful and was very clear that we should come back in 2 days.”   Once I was finally able to excuse myself and send them on their way, I gave Dad a call.  He answered the phone laughing; he had been waiting for my call.

When Dad got sick a lot of the laughter and teasing went on the wayside at first.  Cancer isn’t a word or a thing that inspires joking.  However, there are sometimes that out of no where you can find humor in unexpected places.  I remember the phone ringing and seeing it was coming from Dad, I answered.  By this time his breathing was very labored from the Radiation Pneumonitis, it was hard for him to catch his breath or speak.  So what I heard when I answered the phone was [Heavy Breathing].  After a few moments waiting for him to speak and becoming very uncomfortable with the situation I said “I am NOT going to tell you what I am wearing.”  At which point I heard the line disconnect.  If it had been anyone other than Dad, I would have been worried but I knew that he was cracking up.  Sure enough, he had to have Mom call me back and explain what had transpired because he was still laughing and couldn’t tell her what had happened.

On a serious note, I loved him very much and he loved me.  He loved my Mom, he accepted me as his own, and he gave me 2 wonderful sisters which then resulted in 2 phenomenal brothers-in-law, 2 beautiful nieces and 1 very handsome nephew.

I love you, I miss you and I promise to pass along your wisdom and humor to our three boys; except for the hot flash hugs.

Sunday Night Family Dinner

We have been having Sunday night family dinners at our house with Grandma Trish for the last month and it has been wonderful. Today when she arrived the boys latched onto her and refused to give her up. They wanted to play Legos and they wanted her to play with them. She made them a deal and she played Legos IF they left her watch a "chick flick" while they played. The boys agreed until they discovered what a "chick flick" was at which point Drake stood up and changed the channel. lol! He turned it back when Grandma protested and reminded them of their deal. Not long after that I heard Robby making his gross sound and I knew immediately what was wrong. There was KISSING on Grandma's "chick flick". Robby groaned and Drake covered his face. It was absolutely priceless!

We had a very yummy dinner of Moroccan Lamb w/ Couscous and a side of tears (there were a lot of onions for me to chop).  Grandma baked cookies and brought them over to share.  I LOVE Sunday night family dinner.  <3

I love the retro pictures of domestic bliss.  I guarantee that I didn't look anything like that tonight but its the thought that counts.

All Hallows Eve

We started getting ready for Halloween on Saturday. Bob, Ryan, Robby and I spent the afternoon decorating the front yard. Need to decorate inside but that will be easier and not dependent on the weather. Also need to figure out the menu for the 15th, looking forward to trying some new recipes. Took the 2 little spookables to choose their costumes. Drake chose Venom and Robby chose a Ninja costume (didn't really care what the costume was as long as it had weapons). Had to laugh yesterday when I spotted an elder lady driving down our street and crossing herself when she saw our yard. Both Bob and Ryan cracked up when I told them that. lol P.S. Sorry for the errors on punctuation and paragraphs, not sure how to get around that with the new formatting.

Herbert Lee Claflin

Husband, Brother, Father, Son, Grandfather, Nephew, Uncle, Great Uncle, Friend.

I wish my mind wasn't so scattered right now so that I could truly paint an accurate picture of Dad and of how much he meant to everyone that knew him. Four years ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer and he started to fight. He beat lung cancer, beat radiation pneumonitis, survived multiple rounds of chemo, planned a vacation while on 8 liters of oxygen and made it to a huge goal this summer. The whole Claflin family went to Disneyland for a week. It was such an amazing trip and time for us all to be together. To forget about everyday worries, hassles and struggles. We were able to just be a family at the happiest place on earth.

Dad passed away Friday, September 2nd. He spent the day surrounded by all his grandchildren, daughters and son-in-laws, wife and friends. I am overjoyed thinking that he listened to his family chatter and laugh and was content to know that we all loved him and each other. That we would all take care of each other. He was peaceful and resting surrounded by an infinite amount of love.

We love you, Dad.
